Chixtape 5 is the fourth studio album by Canadian singer Tory Lanez. It was released on November 15, 2019, by Mad Love and Interscope. It is the fifth installment of the Chixtape series with samples of "2000s-era R&B hits". Selecting a few old R&B bangers, he’s created some tracks that will be on playlists for years to come. Tory Lanez has modernised cult hits that are, in some cases, nearly two decades old. And despite the use of these classics, the album still feels like his own. It could almost – almost – become a standalone staple of R&B culture.

Ultimately, despite the concept behind the album, or how much effort Lanez clearly went into creating it, it's hard to enjoy the music when the results are this puerile. The only reason the Chixtape series exists is to create decent songs out of once-great ones, and all of the prominent samples in the world can’t change that.

Throughout Chixtape 5, Lanez delivers great vocal performances over extremely catchy instrumentation. Any fan of R&B or Lanez should find this sonically appealing. It’s evident that everyone involved in the making of this album worked hard to give it a certain theme, and their work paid off well on this project.

Even if you don’t know the songs being sampled, you probably recognize the melodies from listening to the radio and going to house parties. This is what makes Chixtape 5 special. Every song is packed with tiny nostalgic easter eggs that are paired with original elements that create tracks that still sound fresh and unique. Tory is simply using these classic songs to create an aesthetic that illustrates his true thoughts and feelings.

Pop Dust
It's exactly as advertised–each of the projects offers a modern interpretation of a different era in R&B– and gives Lanez the creative liberty to expand on and flip the songs of his R&B idols without having to worry about accusations of mimicry.

Pops Culture
For the most part, new verses share the same love/heartbreak story as the original songs with more of an upbeat tempo. Lanez managed to flip the beats in a way to make it his own while also respecting the original. He provided a different kind of energy and life to well-loved classics.
