  • Taste of Country

'Chief' is likely to be the album that breaks this artist, but when you listen to Eric Church albums you get a sense that he'd be fine if it doesn't.

Chief doesn’t make him a country music Jesus, but it does back up a good deal of his braggadocio.

  • Sounds Like Nashville

Even if it doesn’t become the “Country Music Jesus” of this era, it’s definitely got a spark that has Eric headed on the right track.

  • Kurrent Music

This album is a great record, with a huge amount of variety in sounds and ideas, although it’s tied together with a theme of bars, lost love, and ‘badassness’ that Eric seems to carry around with him.

Chief is defiant, well-conceived, and more carefully executed than it sounds, with some excellent songs.

The songs here are consistently strong. While his outlaw pose grows tiresome at times, the bolder strokes of Chief are also the best.

Chief is a record made for Saturday night, but it’s worth playing on Sunday morning, too.

  • Entertainment

This midlevel country dude, one of Nashville’s most detail-oriented songwriters, peppers his third album, Chief, with so many proper nouns — Waylon and Springsteen, Jack Daniel’s and Jesus — that it’s sometimes hard to hear.

On Chief, Church blends his country swagger with a rock sensibility, calling it the most aggressive record he’s made.
