Charmbracelet

Charmbracelet is the ninth studio album by American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey, released on December 3, 2002 through MonarC Entertainment and Island Records. The album was her first release since her breakdown following the release of her film Glitter (2001) and its accompanying soundtrack album, both of which were critical and commercial failures from the previous year. Critics described Charmbracelet as one of her most personal records, following 1997's Butterfly, Throughout the project, Carey collaborated with several musicians, including Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, 7 Aurelius and Dre & Vidal.--Wikipedia

  • Slant Magazine

Every song is autobiographical to some degree and draws on her publicly turbulent year without ever sounding indignant or asking for pity.

Tempos plod, and hooks are few. She needs bold songs that help her use the power and range for which she is famous. This is like a stream of watercolors that bleed into a puddle of brown.

Almost every track sounds like that which went before – shimmering synth notes and deadened beats underpin the various grunts, whines and bleats that pass for songs.

She cannot coo or softly croon, nor can she perform her trademark gravity-defying vocal runs. Her voice is damaged, and there's not a moment where it sounds strong or inviting.

It is more a PR exercise than anything else, sweeping her recent travails under a glossy carpet of old-fashioned, melismatic soul and hygienic pop-rap.

It has its moments to shine, but there are also a lot of down time.

It is not a very bad album; but the album itself feels as if it was rushed out. It is not an improvement over Rainbow (1999) and Glitter (2001), but I can well say that it contains some of her greatest tracks she's ever recorded. Her vocals here shows a change as well, and it is still the worst effort she has released.

It shows that she’s back to where she was before the “Glitter” misstep. But next time out, she’s going to have to prove herself capable of more.

Too much of it is mired in middle-of-the-road muck.

She remains an astonishing multi-octave singer, capable of hitting high notes that barely sound human. But a voice in itself isn't much use if its not backed up with a good song - and this just doesn't have very many of those.

Her attempt of redemption for her 9th CD was a triumph. It might not be the best CD of all time, but it is one of the best "new" works of Mariah Carey.

Third and hopefully last in her series of somber records sung in a hushed voice.
