chaos and disorder

Chaos and Disorder is the eighteenth studio album by American recording artist Prince. It was released on July 9, 1996 by Warner Bros. Records. The album reached number 26 in the United States and number 14 in the United Kingdom. Although it is now out of print in America and Britain, it was released on Tidalin 2016. Prince refused to promote the album, still engaged in his fight against his Warner Bros. contract, and the album was released simply to fulfill his contractual obligations. The single, "Dinner with Delores", was released in the United Kingdom only and despite the lowkey promotion, became a Top 40 hit, albeit a minor one by his previous standards. -wikipedia

  • Albumism

Chaos and Disorder remains an interesting, yet rousing portrait of one of rock music’s visionaries crafting idiosyncratic music, in the shadow of his darkest hour

At its best, the record sounds like a collection of polished demos.

“Chaos and Disorder” wasn’t anything revolutionary, but not everything has to be. Also, the album may have been a toss off, but it’s a toss off of songs that many bands would kill for.

It is just a collection of middling but not egregiously terrible songs, and the occasion workouts were pretty good… did the job alright, for sure.

It isn't as innovative or mind-blowing as obvious masterpieces, such as "Purple Rain" or "Sign O' the Times." It's more of a spontaneous creation. But it is this more laid-back jamming vibe, that makes it so damn enjoyable.

a vault-clearing throw-together meant to fulfill a contract. No longer content to wallow in a persecution complex, [the artist formerly known as Prince] now apparently feels his fans have to pay for the cross.

While the production doesn't sound rushed, the tunes seem like he made them up on the spot

His swan song on Warner Bros. is a slapped-together throwaway that sounds like mid-'80s Prince. It's not as bad as the title suggests. But he hits his recorded nadir on "Into the Light" and "I Will."

The riffs are fun and satisfying, but the lyrics ... well, the quality of the lyric choices aren't consistent

A couple of good tracks enrich the end of this album and whilst its not a major work from the man, there's enough here to quietly enjoy an average Saturday morning.

Rather than a kiss off, Chaos & Disorder is a blowout going away party and well worth a listen.

A rush job of leftovers, and certainly sounds like it, but it's also more playful and rocks harder (more guitars) than anything he's done in years.
