he's finally left that ongoing garden party to head back to the desert. As Cass County proves, it's fertile ground for him.

he doesn't feel like he's succumbing to either nostalgia or the present; he stoically carries on according to the way things ought to be, and, against all odds, he winds up with a record that's not only easier to enjoy than most of his solo records, but also stronger song for song than many of the early Eagles albums.

Cass County is a very good album, and all of you who thought Don Henley came to country for the wrong reasons should be pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend this album for traditional and contemporary fans alike–the majority is more traditional, but there are nice country rock tracks too.

There are A-listers (Miranda Lambert, Mick Jagger, Dolly Parton), but it is the songs and performances that make this a very good album indeed.

At a time when mainstream country is getting further away from what country music really is, Henley has made an album that was clearly a labor of love.

Generous at 16 tracks, and consistent in how he connects his world-weary originals with well-chosen covers, Henley proves that this longtime rock star - originally from small-town Texas - can go home again.

  • Saving Country Music

I don’t expect Don Henley’s entire country record to sound this classic, but his take on the old Louvin Brothers standard with Dolly helping out was a welcomed treat that tells you this album isn’t going to be Don reaching for commercial relevance. It’s going to be Don making the country record he wants to make.

The wisest move Henley made for this album was to surround himself with country artists who bring a beauty to the album he could never achieve on his own.

Cass County takes an interest in time, nostalgia and the inherent heartbreak of aging, and what makes sense as a country song.

"Cass County" is a Henley vision down to its bones. Whether he is weaving a delicate story song, as on "Waiting Tables" — an achingly perfect "Last Picture Show"-esque tale of the bittersweet yearning that can accompany a small-town life not playing out as hoped — or getting his considerable dander up about the sorry state of modern political discourse on the enjoyably cranky "No, Thank You," which includes a sly reference to the Eagles hit "Take it Easy," Henley gets to the heart of the matter.

it's the elegiac Henley who sticks most firmly in the memory, the one who sings resonant, haunting ballads like "Praying for Rain" or "Train in the Distance". That younger man couldn't have made an album like this.
