There’s no illusion of saying something, they are saying something; there’s no illusion of a superb performance but a superb performance itself; no imitation of quality but rock of very high caliber.

The concert version is the same flawed album but with muted applause — until the encores.

They collapsed in hubris and excess not long afterward -- Rock of the Westies, which followed just months later is as scattered as this is focused -- but this remains a testament to the strengths of their creative partnership.

Rough times would be ahead for the pop superstar, both commercially and critically, but it's doubtful Elton could have ended his classic period any better than he did here.

This album is just too good. If you don’t think this is the greatest thing in the world, then you should rethink your position. If you thought about it, and you still don’t agree with me, then please just humour me and pretend that you do.

Those who do take the time to listen to The Captain & The Kid may not find any timeless Elton John songs, but they will find a legendary performer who has finally decided to lower his eyes from the pop charts and return to his roots.

What sounded exciting two decades ago, both lyrically and sonically, comes off like a deleted scene from Rent (the movie) today.

Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy is an album I respect and one I consider to be possibly the most creative of Elton John’s career.
