  • Saving Country Music

California Sunrise is not going to fundamentally change anything about today’s mainstream country music on its own. It’s not groundbreaking, or so genuinely authentic that we’ll be pointing back at it years from now as where the tide turned. But it’s a step in the right direction.

  • Sounds Like Nashville

California Sunrise combines Pardi’s love of traditional country with a modern feel thanks to distinct percussion and electric guitar combined with pedal steel and fiddle, leaving the listener satisfied. Pardi’s staying power is evident.

It's a winning set of tracks that includes the groove-heavy, write-what-you-know album opener "Out of Style" and the breezy, sweet Number One hit "Head Over Boots."

  • Wide Open Country

One listen to Jon Pardi’s 2014 debut Write You A Song and you immediately get why the California native felt so at home in the rockin’ Texas country scene.

It's a decent listen for sure, with 'She Ain't In It', the title track, and maybe 'Head Over Boots' as standouts, but I'm not sure I'm going to remember much of it. Again, if you like neotraditional country or are so sick of the mainstream you'll listen to anything that'll bring back the good old days, you'll probably enjoy this, but I'm not sure it's got a ton of shelf life - just saying.

  • AllMusic

California Sunrise remains grounded in sinewy, straight-ahead country, sometimes delivered by Pardi with a sly grin. Perhaps his cheer is a bit subdued, but this workingman's diligence is a key element in turning California Sunrise into a frills-free, sturdily crafted collection.

  • My Kind of Country

If Pardi can tone down the rock elements and volume, and lean a little more on those country roots, he may release a great album one day, but he’s not there yet. Download “She Ain’t In It” and skip the rest.

  • Nashville Over Here

Fiddle, pedal steel, a shuffling, two-step melody, they all stay true to country, dare I say country and western’s roots and I am pleased to report that California Sunrise is packed with all and more of the above.

  • Digital Journal

There are a couple of rather loud and 'in your face' moments on here, which are probably needed to ensure mammoth sales among teenagers, but overall this album carries enough warmth, charm, invention and variety to ensure a place on many critics' Top 10 Album of the Year list. I've no doubt it will be on mine.

The opening lines to Pardi’s sophomore album ‘California Sunrise’ lay the foundations for an album that shows daring and a passion for what he sees as country music.

  • Your Life in a Song

This is another very solid release from an artist who deserves a lot of respect for doing it his own way. It’s difficult to find the right balance between what appeals to you as an artist and what will appeal to the masses, but there’s enough on here to please everybody.

  • Stop Pop Country

This is hands down the best mainstream release of the year and most likely the year. Jon Pardi may not be perfect, but if country radio is going to be saved, it's going to be a bunch of guys like him that do it and this is a huge step in the right direction.

  • 2 Country

‘California Sunrise’ is only his second album but it feels like it should be his tenth and as a relatively new artist he is emerging into the genre at a time when the type of music he plays is definitely on the margins of what sells in Nashville these days.
