1985 - offers more of their winsomely rocking tunes ... Carefully crafted instead of raucous, pretty rather than booming, and occasionally affecting, the record is beautifully produced, with Mark Knopfler’s terrific guitar work catching the best light.

Brothers in Arms remains one of their most focused and accomplished albums, and in its succinct pop sense, it's distinctive within their catalog

One of the first full digital recordings, the production on Brothers In Arms is flat-out fantastic, and the album played a major role in ushering in the cd age, which perhaps explains its enduring popularity. B+

The case of Brothers In Arms is one of the most basic, predictable and transparent stories imaginable: Dire Straits shifted into a far more mainstream mode, instantly translating into a commercial breakthrough in the form of what's easily their best selling album, Brothers In Arms.

the first side moves with simple generosity, not a virtue one associates with this studio guitarist's ego trip

Barring that the overall songwriting is way worse, this more mainstream style of theirs wasn’t so unfortunate a move.

An album of contrasts it is, but it's also definitely un-Dire Straits sounding.
