At its best, the results of this level of craftsmanship are thrilling.

while not everything is successful on Boxes—for example, the mid-tempo, electronic-burnished “Lucky One” tries too hard to sound modern—every song has seamless arrangements and a distinctive approach.

This is a record that attempts to unfold but remains grounded within its own humble limitations.

Boxes is a sloppy attempt to follow that charted path.

Not every song is great here – but enough of them are to make this a return to form for the Goo Goo Dolls.

The Goos of lore have evolved their sound into a pop-oriented package that, FINALLY, gives their fans the breath of fresh air the band needed to stay relevant.

The tracks are well structured and easily replayable, and the realists among us have to accept that Goo Goo Dolls have at least tried to make something respectable instead of going out with a whimper.

Overall I would describe the album “Boxes” in a few definitive words like Sentimental, Intimate and Reflective. Vocally and lyrically this album packs a punch if you listen to it and not hold older albums and songs over the Goo Goo Dolls head and like mentioned before to just live in the moment and listen to the music as a whole.

  • CRYPTIC ROCK

Goo Goo Dolls have taken a retrospective approach with Boxes and retouched on the Pop and Contemporary elements that brought some success to their earlier work.

It gradually builds into a sweeping juggernaut of a sing-a-long, comfortably their best moment of the last decade, and is the biggest indicator that the band are back to form.

  • ONE MUSIC

For the most part, “Boxes” seems like an attempt to bring back anthemic guitar rock that made them so popular back in the late 90s, while trying to incorporate elements of modern music. In doing so, however, the Goo Goo Dolls have strangely managed to sound like, well, every other band out there today, but without the edge and youth needed for them to stand out.

“Boxes” breathes new life into the Goo Goo Dolls with its catchy pop-rock arrangements that are instantly likeable and hard to forget.

Though most tracks are perfectly listenable in isolation, there’s too much about Boxes that reeks of generic and lazy songwriting.

Listen to it in your car, the with top down, in the sun. Listen to it alone or next to the one you love. I can guarantee that you will listen to it on repeat.

What Boxes is lacking in originality is made up for in Boxes' radio-ready formula.

'Boxes' isn't as cringe worthy as Thomas' recent attempts at Pop stardom; but if someone were to label it the worst album of the band's career, even Johnny Cochran would struggle to make a case for the defence.

If they can keep making music as pleasing as Boxes, they will be still be relevant long after most of their contemporaries are forgotten.

There’s nothing wrong with great pop music and bands should be applauded for trying something new. The problem is that ‘Boxes’ isn’t a great pop record.
