There is something deeply, embarrasingly satisfying about The Killers’ slick shlock pomp-rock.

Battle Born just might be The Killers’ most focused record, which isn’t typically what’s suggested by the involvement of five different producers.

  • Slant Magazine

A baker’s dozen of straightforward rock anthems, produced by the likes of rock vets Steve Lillywhite and Brendan O’Brien, with a heavy emphasis on reverb.

‘Battle Born,’ the first we’ve heard from the band in four years, is an epically masculine, unapologetically dramatic, thoroughly enjoyable listen -- if you can get over the fact that it’s really, really cheesy.

Battle Born is a full-on band opus: This is where the Killers confront their personal and professional doubts, and achieve an unmistakable, unrelenting us-against-them cohesion.

Battle Born seems intent on making a statement, proving the group could pull off more artistic songs without having to appease radio format programmers, here avoiding easy pop hits in favor of a more expansive sound that's more MOR than AOR.

Anyone can see it: Brandon Flowers remains the prettiest creature in pop music. He seems to be aging in reverse — ever wide-eyed, delicate and up for a good wail.

  • Pretty Much Amazing

If you already don’t buy into The Killers, you’ll probably find Battle Born even more bloated, ridiculous, and over-the-top than anything else they’ve ever done. But if you do buy into it, you’ll love the album for those very reasons.

Everything they do is outsized; their anthems are created for fathomless stadiums, a character quirk they've grown into over the years as they've gone from scrappy wannabes fighting their way out of Las Vegas to the international superstars they've longed to be.
