Maybe he’s most comfortable as a smooth operator, but there are moments on Back Home that suggest Trey is capable of a great deal more.

As I stated in the previous paragraph, there isn’t a single song on the album that I would call a club song; instead, the album features an obnoxious amount of slow jams. With that being said, I think there is value in the phenomenal vocal performances that Trey Songz gifts us with on the album. I think there is also value in the maturation that he shows as a human being on the album.

I’ve already seen a few major music outlets bemoan Back Home for having “too many slow jams” and not enough “flair.” Well, if you wanna party, Trigga and Chapter V are the albums for you. Been there, done that. For the rest of us, Trey Songz has finally delivered an authentic R&B album for R&B fans.

At twenty-two songs (four of which are interludes), Back Home not only solidifies that Songz is ready to mature as an R&B artist but gives us one of 2020’s best R&B albums.

Trey Songz isn’t known for his lyrics and is not much of a storyteller, but if you are someone who doesn’t care about an artist portraying a story through their craft, this is the album for you.
