Away from the World

Away from the World is the eighth studio album by Dave Matthews Band (DMB). The album's title comes from a line in the song "The Riff": "Sitting in a box / away from the world out there." According to Matthews, it relates to the dour idea that we are born and die alone and that "our body is our box." - Wikipedia

  • Rolling Stong

The first DMB record in more than three years serves up the Matthews magic in all its musically tight, emotionally bumfuzzled splendor.

"Away From the World" focuses on love, relationships and parental responsibility, making it both musically and lyrically a kind of state of the DMB union.

It's probably not going to bring DMB any new fans, and it's definitely not going to make any of their notoriously loyal older fans jump ship. The 11 songs on 'Away From the World' are music to play at concerts when the crowd needs to go get another beer.

The album brings funk, jazzy New Orleans style R&B, some jaw-dropping rock riffs, and the sweet acoustics the band is known for.

Dave Matthews and co. probably made their best album in quite some time.

  • All Music

It's a little of everything that the Dave Matthews Band does, condensed to a relatively tight 53 minutes. It is a bit of a rare thing: a return to form lacking an ounce of nostalgia.

  • The Musical Hype

The best material appears at the forefront of the album, while the last couple of songs are hampered by length. All in all, it’s solid and enjoyable.

The Dave Matthews Band’s first post-break album is a folksy, jammy tumble that feels much like the group’s earliest work.

The long-running jam band’s ninth album centers on hard-earned optimism but smooths out much of what makes Dave Matthews’ music engaging.
