| Avril LavigneAvril Lavigne Under My Skin
Under My Skin is the second studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne. It was released on May 19, 2004, by Arista Records and RCA Records. Lavigne wrote most of the album with singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, who invited her to a Malibu in-house recording studio shared by Kreviazuk and her husband Raine Maida, where Lavigne recorded many of the songs. The album was produced by Maida, Don Gilmore, and Butch Walker.-Wikipedia

Rolling Stone
June 10, 2004. For her new album, Under My Skin, Lavigne split with Matrix, the team that wrote much of Let Go. Working with an unlikely crew of songwriters — her guitarist Evan Taubenfeld and the Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk — she put together an album that’s both more satisfying and more formulaic.

Slant Magazine
May 20, 2004. Under My Skin is more metal than “punk” . . . , and it’s a sound the young and feisty Canadian adopts rather convincingly (Amy Lee be warned). This time things may be less bounce and more crunch, but it’s suspiciously uneven for rock’s supposed prodigious daughter.

AllMusic
. . . Under My Skin is less fun than Let Go since there's nothing as giddy as "Sk8er Boi," even if much of it is written from a similarly adolescent vantage. . . . it's not that Lavigne hasn't matured, but it's that her talents are better suited on music that's a little less contemplative and deliberate than Under My Skin.

The Guardian
May 20, 2004. The music is so anodyne that you don't pay much attention to Lavigne's lyrics. This proves to be a small mercy: examination of the CD booklet reveals that prolonged exposure to her words could leave a previously healthy adult rocking backwards and forwards in a foetal ball.

PopMatters
August 23, 2004. Taken as a whole, the album lacks the eclectic character of Lavigne's early singles. Under My Skin is a good, if slightly disappointing, follow-up that will undoubtedly sell a gazillion copies regardless of anything I may say.

AV Club - Music
May 28, 2004. Niggling inconsistencies might not matter much, but they signal Under My Skin's fateful habit of falling toward a default doom-and-gloom mode.
-
BBC - Music
May 25, 2004. . . . until Avril learns to take herself a little less seriously and manage a glimmer of a smile, she will continue to sound like a petulant teenager having a strop.

May 24, 2004. Overall, Under My Skin is a good follow up to debut Let Go, but what will be really interesting is to see what Avril Lavigne does next.

September 30, 2014. The final score for Avril Lavigne’s Under My Skin is 9/13. Did I like it as much now as I did in 2004? Not quite. It might have been that I liked a couple more of those sappy songs.

Entertainment
May 28, 2004. Ultimately, the unrelenting sternness of the singer and the songs become a little tiresome. But there’s something grimly fascinating about ”Under My Skin.” Lurking beneath is a continual give-and-take between the girly Avril (the one who will ”clean my room when all else fails” and complains of her beau’s ”dumb friends”) and the humorless quasi grown-up heard elsewhere on the record.
-
Melodic Net
Avril has recorded a "VERY SAFE" album, let?s just hope she wants to be more adventurous on the next album and ofcourse maintain the more rocking style she has on "Under my skin".
-
Common Sense Media
Avril does a terrific job delivering one guitar-fueled power ballad after another in a voice that is girlish yet strong and expressive.
-
Plugged In
The new disc may not have as many upbeat pop hooks, but teens will still resonate with the artist’s raw emotion. A solid pick except for a few choice words and the rebellious aura Avril fans have come to expect.

February 21, 2019. Not sure what's happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Under My Skin gets. Under My Skin stated simply is one of Avril Lavigne's best CDs to date.

RTE
June 10, 2004. 'Under My Skin', however, has too much harsh rock and not enough of Lavigne's softer side. This is one offering that might get under your skin, but for all the wrong reasons.

May 24, 2004. Seen over album length, she has 2004 nevertheless made the transfer to the upper school of rock school. Keep it up!

Music Critic
. . . it's kinda hit and miss, especially on those slow-dance lighter-waving numbers like "Slipped Away." But the songs have some heft to them, some weight, something that might indicate longer-term ambitions for her. I hope she takes some more chances next time, personally, but who cares what the hell I think about the next record? This is one is really pretty good.

January 29, 2013. Releasing an album so quickly after its predecessor might lead to the assumption that the quality would have declined, but such is not the case with "Under My Skin"; if anything, this album surpasses its predecessor.

Avril isn’t going anywhere and she may just live up to the part of her hype that tries to pass her off as a legitimate rocker, it just didn’t happen with this CD.

June 3, 2004.. Yes, the Canadian teenage star is as feisty as ever - but while her bestselling debut album had a skater-punk vibe to it, the follow-up sees her grappling with rather more adult problems, with a more corporate sound to match. . . . Avril herself is still a star - but her music is only skin-deep.

My Site - The Best Entertainment
Under My Skin is the latest release from Pop Superstar Avril Lavigne, and I can only think of one word to describe it… AWESOME! Under My Skin is a nicely varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly talented artist.

Soul Shine Magazine
May 25, 2004. Avril Lavigne is growing up. Her sophomore album, Under My Skin, is a little more mature, a little less teenage angst. Fortunately for fans of her first album, her music hasn't changed that much.

Metal Inside
There were not just a few "critics" who would have liked to label AVRIL LAVIGNE despite the surprisingly strong debut album "Let Go" as a capricious brat and musical fluke. Well, all those now, less than two years later, have to learn a lesson, because the present "Under My Skin" album can even outperform the debut by a few points.
-
The Coast
December 6, 2007. Lavigne sings Alanis-lite songs about boys, and there are no raps about Napanee. It’s inoffensive at worst.

Avril's second album, 2004's Under My Skin shows that Lavigne hasn't only shed her trademark ties for thrift-shop skirts, she's essentially ditched the sound of her Let Go album, bringing herself closer to the mature aspirations of fellow young singer/songwriter Michelle Branch.
