Attention Attention

Attention Attention is the sixth studio album by American rock band Shinedown. "At the beginning of the record, you can feel this intensity and these bold statements that are being made, but as the record progresses, you hear the individual and the record start to shift, and they start to get their confidence back, and they start to understand what's going on, because they're having to face emotions that they've never really faced before. • Louder

A loose concept album that charts the lows, highs and subsequent recovery of its protagonist, sonically it’s punchier, angrier even, than previous records.

Overall, “ATTENTION ATTENTION” is a pretty good album. It’s one of the best albums of the year so far, with a few minor issues but not enough to bring it down as a whole. The album maybe drags on a little to long, and there are few weird issues with the placement of songs. (all the slower more sentimental ballads are clumped together) But as a whole, this feels like a good step forward for Shinedown.

  • Distorted Sound

ATTENTION ATTENTION is a concept album. It follows an individual’s journey through life’s mental and physical battles. The reality of coming to terms with yourself and what is going on in life. What makes it so personal is that the stories being told are SHINEDOWN’s, the highs, the lows and everything in between. Mentally, this album is set to be a heavy listen.

At one time it felt as if Shinedown exploded on to your screen and into your headphones overnight, sky rocketing from rising stars to one of the most popular front-runners of contemporary rock since their formation in 2001. Now, with a catalogue of hook-laden songs filled with choruses built for arenas, there is little surprise as to why the masses continue to gravitate toward the Jacksonville, Florida rockers, and it is hard to imagine the scene without them

As a whole, Attention Attention is an easy step up from the band’s previous effort and offers something that is generally fun and rewarding; it’s nothing revolutionary or ground-breaking, but then it was never going to be.

Taking a brave approach by undertaking a concept album that discusses mental health, and an unnamed protagonist’s journey through struggles and mental health issues, Shinedown have managed to simultaneously make both a positive statement and shine a light on a pressing and ever more vital conversation, while also upping the ante on the guitars and the consistency of their songs.

It seems crazy that a band with such an amazing arsenal of life affirming albums behind them should present something so unremarkable, something that needs to be played through five times before its songs become infectious. Don’t worry, Shinedown, we still want you to come to Australia!

Concept albums can be tricky to pull off in the current single track culture of music. But for Shinedown and Attention Attention, it seems easy. The struggle of stringing an album together in story form comes naturally to Shinedown, especially given the heavy subject matter.

It might be contentious, but it’s somewhat easy to see why Shinedown are one of the bigger US radio rock bands. Their choice to stay away from the more dour, sludgy post-grunge tones of their contemporaries has always fared well for them, and, at least in terms of straightforward hooks, they’ve at least managed in the past to deliver something that can hit with impact, not hindered whatsoever by Brent Smith’s genuinely impressive vocals.

The sixth album, and a concept album of all things from Shinedown ends up being their best work in years. This record works well on multiple levels. It’s emotionally heavy, it’s edgy, but most of all it’s just good. Listen to this one over and over this year, that’s what we’ll be doing.

Shinedown’s sixth studio album ATTENTION ATTENTION has an anger, the beats are raw, guitars are gritty and the lyrics? They are bitter, hard to listen to at times as the album addresses melancholy, loss of hope and mental health. They get your attention by weaving deep lyrics that embolden the words that you listen to and digest the meaning. This is an album that drives deep into your consciousness with every listen.
