In Artist 2.0, the Brooklyn rapper tries to mesh all of his thoughts and music-making abilities together, and what he ends up giving us is a body-of-work that is fatiguing, but also real as s**t and extremely infectious.

Although some of the beats and flows seem repetitive, Artist 2.0 still manifests the brilliant melodic storytelling A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie is acclaimed for. The artist’s lyrics and delivery are emotional, and the mixture of rapping and singing is still as astonishing as it was when his music was first discovered.

Overall, Artist 2.0 finds him reaching for the throne but mostly coming up with air. Be that as it may, the highs still undoubtedly overshadow the lows and make for a concentrated listening experience.

In fact, every feature on this album has contributed much more to the genre than Boogie ever has. When something is considered “2.0,” it usually signifies a stark improvement of some kind. I guess in Boogie’s terms though, a stylistic update is the equivalent of a Dell computer in 2020.

There’s a good album at the core of this project. Maybe with some sharper editing and clearer focus on who A Boogie is and who he wants to be, he can unlock that formula on his inevitable followup.

There are some nice melodies scattered throughout it but a lot of the songs are boring and especially the verses in this. It's also too long and has too much filler - we didn't need 20 songs and I definitely didn't need to sit down for an hour to listen to it.

Although not every song has the potential it could have, A Boogie releases an album that’s original and a fantastic transition back to his roots about young love, heartbreak, and growing up in the Bronx.

While the album is enjoyable, it doesn't always feel like its A Boogie at his best and it seems like, to A Boogie, "artist" means less rapping, which inherently is not the case.

He uses the formulas we know and changes them up just enough, centering it all with one of the best ears for a hook in the game.

All in all, A Boogie wit da Hoodie shows himself to be an atypical rapper and a product of today’s more emotive take on musical genres in Artist 2.0, though there are some weak links in the tracklist and featured artists that are too strong for Dubose to keep up with them.
