July 8, 2015. Musically, Angels And Alcohol sticks to the meat, ma'am: no beats, no AutoTune, just plenty of brilliant playing by Jackson's many friends in the community of seasoned Nashville cats.

July 17, 2015. . . . but often the real appeal of Angels and Alcohol is in the singer, not the song. As the album rolls on, it's easy to get sucked into his eloquent phrasing and assured band. He might not be trying anything new, but it's a pleasure to hear a master enjoying his work.

  • Taste of Country

July 17, 2015. From top to bottom, Angels and Alcohol is a warm record that longtime fans will appreciate. He’s not pursuing radio as aggressively as he once did, which is a shame, because songs like “Jim and Jack and Hank” (technically a single) would sound as good on FM today as Jackson's cuts did 25 years ago.

July 23, 2015. There are no stretches or surprises here, just good old country music that will not leave Jackson’s fans disappointed. Sometimes that’s enough.

July 20, 2015. All in all, Angels and Alcohol is a great album, and in the absence of George Strait, Alan Jackson is our reigning country king. He has delivered, and I hope he will continue making refreshingly good country music.

  • Saving Country Music

July 18, 2015. Angels & Alcohol has a few bumps in the road—some songs that maybe could have benefited from borrowing a line or two from a co-writer—and then the album has few really good ones. And overall, with that classic voice backed by traditional sounds, there’s just something about an Alan Jackson album that puts a smile on your face, and makes you hope new Alan Jackson albums don’t go away anytime soon.

March 20, 2017. It’s an excellent record, one many country fans have been chomping at the bit for. Angels and Alcohol is a breath of fresh air to those of us who are physically sick of the low hanging fruit featured on mainstream country radio today.

  • Country Standard Time

Jackson, thankfully, does not veer from his traditional country beat on his first new studio disc in three years. It's the traditional sound that makes him a throwback today.

July 25, 2015. While Angels and Alcohol only has ten songs, none of the songs are filler, which makes the album feel as full as the longer albums of his peers. . . . Moreover, 26 years into his incredible career, Jackson’s new album is decidedly his best specifically country album in at least a decade.

August 8, 2015. Angels and Alcohol is a solid release from Jackson. It’s hard for any artist to find longevity in the music industry but Jackson has managed his. His music is as good today as it’s ever been and he’s still got a huge fanbase.

September 3, 2016. Alan Jackson has delivered an album that is the musical equivalent of Jeremy Corbyn, it sits uncomfortably among the mainstream that Alan is part of, but people are voting for it. That is a win for everyone.

July 14, 2015. To sum it up, Angels and Alcohol is like that familiar pair of shoes in the corner that you’re just not going to throw away anytime soon – and that’s a good thing!

September 8, 2015. Alan Jackson once again proves capable of finding fresh wrinkles in his comfortable, familiar style. His new album, "Angels and Alcohol," delivers good-time honky-tonk, emotional country ballads and gentle, philosophical tunes about the enduring strengths and occasional difficulties of life.

I hate music reviews, or at least writing them, but seriously, you should take listen to (and then buy) Alan Jackson’s new album, Angels and Alcohol, because it’s really good.

  • Newsday

July 15, 2015. The modesty is genuine, seeing how Jackson stays away from the spotlight as much as a country superstar can. But his mantra also works as a goal. And on his new album, "Angels and Alcohol" (ACR/EMI Nashville), Jackson achieves it, with a selection of deceptively simple songs that put all the way-too-clever jokes and all the bro-country currently littering the country airwaves to shame.

  • Think Country Music

August 6, 2015. While some may say that his album’s formula is dated and predictable, my reply to them would be “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. He has definitely kept the promise he made way back in 1989 after the release of his first album to “carry on the tradition of real hard-core country music” and I am sure I am not alone in being thankful for that!

With the constant reinvention of what sells — and plays — well in mainstream country music, there's also comfort in the ongoing consistency of the tradition-leaning sound and life-exploring and -affirming storytelling that has marked every one of Jackson's releases over the past 25 years.

  • This Is Country Music

Alan Jackson continues to prove why he's one of the best in the business with Angels and Alcohol. . . . There's almost nobody that does country music better, and this record is just another example of that.
