AMERICA.

America (stylized in uppercase) is the fifth studio album by American rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars, released on April 6, 2018 through Interscope Records. It is their first album in five years, after Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams (2013), as well as their first release for Interscope, following the band's departure from Virgin Records in 2014. It is also the final album by the band to feature lead guitarist Tomo Mili evi , who left the band two months after its release.Produced by frontman Jared Leto alongside Yellow Claw, Zedd, Robopop, and others, the album represents a drastic shift from the experimental compositions of their previous efforts, opting for an electronic and art pop influenced sound. Lyrically, it a concept album exploring themes such as politics, sex, and fame. The album was promoted with three singles "Walk on Water", "Dangerous Night", and "Rescue Me" in addition to the Monolith Tour. The album received polarized reviews from critics. Some commended the conceptual themes, while others felt that they were not fully developed; critics were also divided over the band's change in sound. Upon its release, America debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, becoming the band's highest entry on the chart, and reached the top five in several other countries. -WIKIPEDIA

It’s a rare glimpse at a Thirty Seconds to Mars that’s willing to subvert expectations. And it’s a testament to the power of judicious editing—a virtue that a Hollywood pro like Leto should place more value in with his music.

America is an exaggerated, Spinal Tap-style redux of the panicked pop moves that U2 has made on its last two albums, the “we’re a middle-aged rock band that’s afraid of irrelevance” record you release when mass acceptance must be achieved by any means necessary.

America succeeds in representing its namesake: it's confused, inspirational, and, like Thirty Seconds To Mars circa 2018, at a serious crossroads where the future is uncertain but oddly hopeful.

‘America’ is the first album by Thirty Seconds to Mars that I have fundamentally hated from top to bottom. An album that lacks soul and conviction, that is completely devoid of a personality and is completely crippled by overbearing production that strips it of all humanity.

I once saw a bright future for the Leto brothers and Tomo, now all I see is badly lit fascist rallies, brainwashed teenagers and an increasingly delusional frontman. AVOID.

America, like the country its named for, is a bit of a conundrum: it is a good record, possibly a great record, but it is not a Rock record. Saturated in electronics and Hip-Hop beats that would set Katy Perry’s little heart a-flutter, this is a collection that sees Thirty Seconds to Mars moving ever further from their hard rocking roots and toward a more universally-friendly sound that will make the Millennials titter.

America is ambitious, that much has to be said; at many moments it’s triumphant and charismatic, and certainly feels like a natural addition to Thirty Seconds to Mars’ ever-changing catalogue.

'America' is a very unsuitable name for the album. Some of the songs lyrics and music don't fit well together or even at all. You can definitely tell the writing on this album wasn't lazy but directionless which probably made it even harder to write and why we have songs on this album that don't feel like they belong on an album together.

Some of the production tropes may date this, personal taste may wish there were more guitar and less electronica, but the selection of songs on America is undeniably 30 Seconds To Mars, and undeniably of a high standard.

Thirty Seconds To Mars captures the essence of today in America, perfectly providing a snapshot of this chaotic and uncertain time in history.

There's no doubt the band risk alienating some who adore their guitar-driven output and some of the material here takes multiple listens hit home, but in the main their gamble pays off.

While fans of Thirty Seconds to Mars may miss their old, heavy rock sound, it is evident through their latest album “America” that they have worked hard in modernizing and evolving their sound through an electronic style, while also remaining true to their old sound by continuing to use Leto’s powerful vocals to guide a majority of the tracks.

“America” features EDM producers Zedd and Yellow Claw. While this seems to be an effort to keep up with the times and assimilate to what the kids listen to these days, the effect is boring and outdated.

America is a great album but not ones wanting 30STM to return to their roots. This sees them moving from a hard rock band to a universally friendly Pop-rock band. This is a perfect record with no skippable tracks. 30 Seconds to Mars are changing but their doing a damn good job. America is an album you want to listen to.

Unfortunately there’s not much to redeem this album – we’re close to a third of the way through the year and I’m pretty sure we’ve got a strong contender for, if not the worst rock album of the year, then definitely the most boring.

'America' manages to take modern influences and apply them to the classic 30 Seconds to Mars sound. It's something many bands find difficult to do and it's questionable whether Mars have managed it before now, but they've got it right here for the most part.

The only real plus points here are that Leto hasn’t lost the ability to belt out a line and he still knows how to make a tune sound big. But that’s not enough, is it?

For an album attempting to reach a broad audience, the music is sadly vanilla and insincere. While the lyrics are indeed technically political, the album’s overtly formulaic nature makes these words seem insincere.
