Amends was made with good intentions, but misses the point entirely.

Amends is by no means the greatest album to bear Chester Bennington’s name of course but, put simply, it never needed to be. Whilst not every single moment tackled on the album is a success, the mere existence of these sessions will likely be more than enough of a fitting eulogy for the vast majority of the late singer’s fanbase to remember him by.

Grey Daze might not be offering the most original or well-composed collection of re-recordings, but they are offering the unbroken spirit and soul from the era which gave birth to Bennington’s glory.

Amends is a portrait of the artist as a young man, offering fans the chance to time travel and spend time with an old friend. It’s also the origin of Chester Bennington as a musician and is therefore an essential, rewarding and emotional listening for anyone who is a fan of his work.

Throughout the entirety of Amends, from ‘She Shines’, ‘Just Like Heroin’ to ‘The Syndrome’, Sean Dowdell, Mace Beyers and Cristin Davis offer a second chance in hearing the Grey Daze of old in a whole new light, done so with the utmost respect and love that Chester Bennington deserved.

After you hear the formula a few times, the songs may flow together, and while the closer “Shouting Out” stretches its wings with strong backing melodies, the uplifting attempt is still colored by the underlying shadows. They took a chance on a choir-like chorus, and it works.

What Dowdell and company have done in Amends will make Bennington proud. Fans now have more material to sing along to and embrace the contribution Bennington has made in rock history.

Grey Daze's album featuring gems by Chester Bennington is eternal like the late singer.

Amends is worth a listen as it’s a pretty decent record, however, unless you are a Chester Bennington completist and have to own everything that he and the other members of LP did, then go and get it.

A record spilling over with well written songs and an exuberant spirit, 'Amends' is quite the public affair, and one of painfully private moments.

In all honesty, it’s probably an album that shouldn’t have been released, not just for moral reasons but because there’s no reason for Grey Daze to try and exist in modern rock other than to sate completionists. Even with its reworkings, Amends just sounds dated and drab, highlighting the only reason it got a green light at all was as a memorial piece that it doesn’t even do that well.

Taken as a whole, this is a solid collection of songs that shouldn’t be overshadowed for its history.

I truly believe Chester would absolutely be proud of Amends. Each song has its own meaning to me, and they are all intensely emotional to even begin to describe.

If we were to explain this album in 3 words, they would be ‘tragic, ‘vulnerable’ and above all… ‘evocative’.

What is evident here is the huge burden they carried from a young age, these songs are testament to a band that lived, then lost and are now ready to live again. The music leaves you drained, weary and a little teary. The whys, wherefores and what ifs come into play, as we relive our memories and create new ones with Grey Daze.
