Immortal Reviews
Poppy’s Am I A Girl? may be the most bewildering album of the year, but in great ways. You truly can never understand what’s going on, but all the while Poppy delivers great melodies, hooks, and memorable lines. You won’t forget this album simply because of how unpredictable it is, but at the same time you can’t help but love it. Poppy may be the weirdest popstar out there, but you have to appreciate how daring she is.

The Young Folks
In all, Poppy’s album is disappointing. With only a few gems like “Chic Chick,” “Fashion After All” and “Time is Up,” the majority of the album features lyrically lazy and unappealing tracks that contribute nothing to the structure of the album.
-
The Red & Black
The album proves the Poppy project can remain intriguing and hypnotic, both visually and sonically, wherever it goes.

Highsnobiety
Am I a Girl? is an enjoyable enough club record, but it fails to add anything new to the conversation. Not every album can (or even should) have to address subjects of great consequence, but one would have hoped that we would have at least gotten a larger glimpse into who Poppy is for album number two.

International Socialists
While Poppy’s Am I a Girl? could push some away for the artists strange persona and targeted synthpop and metal sound, there is an interesting sci-fi story under the surface for those willing to take the time to listen to the album as a whole experience rather than just the singles. It ultimately serves as an incredibly powerful, if not catchy, soundtrack to a world in which the ideas of social justice and human rights are seen as debatable. This is just as much the soundtrack to the horrors of capitalism as it is a pastiche of celebrity in 2018.

ACRN
Poppy’s newest project is a mildly disappointing walk through a pre-explored territory. That is until she flips a switch in “Play Destroy”, and the album becomes a uniquely entertaining walk between two diametrically opposed genres one would think to result in a cacophonous mess. Poppy nimbly dances across this tightrope and makes it look easy. Unfortunately, the experimental nature of the album’s final two songs is held back by ten others that are content to hike already documented paths. Hopefully Poppy continues to march this unlit trail undeterred of the unknown. Whatever she finds will be wholly hers, and most likely a blast to listen to.

Noise Not Music
Along with the massive closer “X” there are countless crazy whiplash style changes that are just so much fun. I really want a whole album of this insane metal-pop combination but Am I a Girl? gives me nothing to complain about.

Peanut Butter Pope
There’s never a dull or restrained moment on ‘Am I A Girl?’, even the odd, near-contrivedly idiosyncratic moments, are still at least idiosyncratic, with Poppy reminding the world that it’s good to be different.

Spectrum Pulse
But as a whole... look, I'll give Poppy credit where it's due, this is not a bad album, and I understand the direction coming down from the label to push her in this direction - and again, the grooves and hooks remain solid and I won't deny the writing still has some of that distinctive flavor. But man, it's the wrong push across the board, moving Poppy away from the core of her persona towards something increasingly thin and cliched in pop subversion - and given that deconstruction is the foundation of her appeal in all categories, that's a major problem, both here and going forward. And thus for me... yeah, it's a solid

The Top Tens
So to speak, Am I A Girl? may be both the perfect pop and anti-pop album of the year. There’s little doubt that Poppy, aided by a bunch of first class producers, masters the genre’s aesthetics so precisely she could easily play in the first league, while cleverly addressing and satirizing the superficial nature of fame and nonreflective, god-like worshipping by the fans that comes along with it. That makes the album a musically and lyrically appealing fodder for fans of electronic radio music who also like to take a critical look at pop culture.

Music Amino
This LP is another solid addition in Poppy's weird and amazing discography. It is her most experimental album to date.

All Music
While it's not as cohesive as Poppy.Computer, Am I a Girl? definitely isn't stale, and it succeeds at expanding Poppy's sound and identity enough to keep fans listening and guessing.

The Anomaly Diary
I’m happy that this album exists. Throughout the 40 minutes of listening to it, I never once had second thoughts of skipping any track. Is this album the saving grace for Pop Music? I don’t think so but it is definitely a step in the right direction.
-
The Needle Drop
Poppy and her collaborators have gotten a lot better at working her persona into her music and crafting creative pop songs since last year's Poppy.Computer.

Vulture
“When other celebrities started exploring it,” Poppy replies, a possible hat tip that the issue of gender and identity, which is under very real attack in this country right now, is but another trendy toy in Poppy’s postmodern playpen. I sincerely hope I’m wrong about that assertion, which casts Poppy’s stagy detachment in a disgustingly offensive new light and suggests that, like so much of Am I a Girl?, her digital-dreck performance-art pose isn’t nearly as interesting as it’s made out to be.

Inkey Magazine
Poppy is gearing up to be a Gary Numan of current times and while there a few swings and misses ‘Am I A Girl?’ is a more polished, more focused album compared to her début, the future is indeed bright for our YouTube Android, providing we don’t kill ourselves in the process.
-
Vanyaland
Am I A Girl? opens the door for more engaging themes than her usual illuminati imagery. Whether or not this goes with her critique of pop music is another thesis altogether, and in this moment, doesn’t really matter. What matters right now is that Poppy doesn’t need to know if she’s a girl or not; being a goddamn superstar goes with any gender.

Student Life
Whether you’ve heard of the female artist and internet sensation Poppy (also known as That Poppy), there’s no doubt that the sound of her latest album ‘Am I A Girl?’ is moving musically and lyrically.
-
Talk House
Poppy is full of contradictions. She and Sinclair are trying super hard to be edgy and deep, but totally missing the mark. Their whole act is like a bad college art project that somehow got international attention before they figured out what their thesis statement was. In an attempt to mock fame, Poppy has also completely given into it. I mean, at this point, she’s touring, giving interviews, and collaborating with musicians like Grimes. Poppy’s new album Am I A Girl? doesn’t answer any of the questions we have about her, but instead creates more confusion, as well as a garbage-pop induced headache.

ALT 92.3
Poppy is one of the more interesting personalities to emerge over the last several years. Playing with classic philisophical identity tropes alongside engaging YouTube influencer culture, she lands somewhere between human, brand, and total imaginary character. Her new album, "Am I A Girl?", out today via Diplo's Mad Decent label, addresses all of this head on, as you can see from the title, through a winding Candyland pop landscape that drops you in a surprising final square.

NYLON
If you think too far into Poppy, it becomes difficult to enjoy Poppy. AMIAGIRL? provides no emotional relatability, nor does it convey any broader messages that are easy to latch onto. It’s catchy and palatable; a polished work. But it’s just that until Poppy decides to reveal more, or until listeners and observers of the Poppy machine go mad trying to gain a deeper understanding of who or what Poppy is. Is she even a girl? I still don’t know.

The Pop Project
I highly recommend giving “Am I A Girl?” a listen. It’s all bops with extremely good and catchy lyrics are meaningful. I love me a catchy tune with a great message. Poppy is still the queen of the Internet. I hope she is able to capitalize on this album and ride it the metal road into the future.

The Electricity Club
Am I a Girl? Is a much more polished effort than 2017’s Poppy.Computer. The compositions here are busier, beefier affairs and there’s some impressive tentpole bangers that should help to move Poppy onto a bigger stage and a broader audience.
-
Frodo McGee
This LP delivers a more experimental pop sound with some nice synth-pop and is definitely worth a listen.
-
Mashed Poptato
This record comes in almost 40 minutes and its singles were extremely interesting and, dare I say, surprisingly absolutely awesome, maybe even better than the ones she released for her debut album so whatever’s the case it’s worth a listen.

Babe Station
I will have to see where Poppy takes her career as a musician next to fully make up my mind about her, but for the minute I will leave her where she is. Her electro-pop is proving popular with fans of the genre and I did enjoy some of the tracks, but I probably won’t be listening to ‘Am I A Girl?’ in a hurry. However, it did make me have a lot of thoughts and feelings, which I think we can all agree is never a bad thing.

All Music One
Poppy’s new album has achieved what it was set out for and that is a fun-filled album with catchy lyrics and unique electronic beats. Despite a few out of the ordinary tracks, this album remains lively and cheerful throughout.
