"Ritual de lo Habitual: Alive at 25" is a silver commemoration and full live presentation of the funky, hazy, swoony, bombastic and meditative "Ritual de lo Habitual". It's still a necessary and vital album, one that ignited a festering American rock scene.

Watching their performance in Alive at Twenty Five, playing such songs as “Stop,” and “Ain’t No Right,” the more aggressive numbers which were always live highlights, the band sounds good, professional, even powerful, but there is an indefinable lack of danger. Maybe it’s the adulation of ten thousand adoring fans, maybe it’s Farrell’s healthy demeanor, his lithe figure and shiny skin looking like the result of too much yoga and perhaps a facelift. Maybe it’s how one can no longer separate Dave Navarro the brilliant alt rock guitar hero from the guy who’s appeared in one too many reality TV shows, usually without his shirt on (I think he ditches it three songs into this concert). Or maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m too judgemental to appreciate it for what it is. Or maybe I can’t ignore how the scantily clad backup dancers are just like the ones glam-metallers Mötley Crüe trot out on tour and how unthreatening and routine it all is, just like any other big time rock show. So much for being an alternative.

Founded by Farrell and original bass guitarist Eric Avery following the disintegration of Farrell's previous band Psi Com, Jane's Addiction was one of the first bands from the early 1990s alternative rock movement to gain both mainstream media attention and commercial success in the United States. Jane's Addiction's first release was a self-titled live album in 1987 and quickly caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records. The band's first two studio albums, Nothing's Shocking (1988) and Ritual de lo habitual (1990), were released to widespread critical acclaim, and an increasing cult fanbase. As a result, Jane's Addiction became icons of what Farrell dubbed the "Alternative Nation". The band's initial farewell tour, in 1991, launched the first Lollapalooza, which has since become a perennial alternative rock festival.

“Jane’s Addiction – Alive at Twenty-Five” is a rather amazing live concert performance. Plus, you get many interviews with Perry Farrell and the band talking about the history of their first major album. I just wish that a concert performance of this concept didn’t have a lossy audio track. Jane’s Addiction has a few big numbers and that requires some musical punch-up. Wow…25 years and both me and Jane’s Addiction are still here… a minor miracle in itself. For me Ritual De Lo Habitual was one of the defining albums of the 90s. An eclectic mix of classic rock, folk, funk and punk that blew minds and shattered musical preconceptions. Well that was then and this is now – twenty five years later the band (featuring three of the Ritual line-up plus long term bassist Chris Chaney) reprise the full album plus a few Jane’s Addiction classics (‘Mountain Song, ‘Nothing’s Shocking’ amongst others) in a live set recorded at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in California. Musically it’s spot on with the band faithfully reproducing classic songs such as ‘Stop’, ‘Been Caught Stealing’ and ‘Then She Did’ with a particularly stunning version of the 13 minute masterpiece ‘Three Days’ featuring the Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins. Although the fragility of Perry Farrell’s vocals is fairly clear throughout the recording his vulnerability in delivering these songs was always part of the magic. A timely reminder of just how great Ritual was, and indeed still is. Unfortunately the DVD wouldn’t play so I can’t really comment on the visual aspect of this package.

And how could anyone really argue with that? Not even me – who hates the “human jukebox” nature of front-to-back album shows. I cannot find anything to dislike about Alive at 25 because Jane’s Addiction put more effort into this performance than they did when they were promoting Ritual De Lo Habitual in the early Nineties. Here, viewers get the performances they always wanted back in the day, but only occasionally (at best) got.
