Alicia

Alicia (stylized in all caps) is the seventh studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter Alicia Keys. It was recorded at Oven Studios in New York City and released by RCA Records on September 18, 2020. Written and produced largely by Keys, the album also features songwriting and production contributions from Swizz BeatzLudwig GöranssonRob KnoxEd Sheeran, and The-Dream, among others. Alicia's mostly low-tempo and subtly performed music is rooted in the R&B and soul styles of Keys' earliest work, while her lyrics explore sociopolitical concerns and forms of love with ideas shared in her memoir, More Myself (2020), written in the same period as the album's recording. -Wikipedia

‘ALICIA’ is an impressive record to her career and her return to music. A perfectly balanced album that matches her newfound vibe as a woman ready to tell her truth. This album is a note that good things come to those who wait.

Keys has pitched this album as genreless and, although the sonics are manifold – reggae, R&B, funk and even country – you get the sense that Keys has her eyes more on the narrative. There is genuine hope, despair, frustration and even ambivalence. In a world more in need of a key change than ever, we need this Alicia.

Alicia is a fantastic album! I don’t know how long it took her to make it, but it sounds high-quality, it sounds intricate, and it sounds very powerful. Great job, Alicia!

Keys demonstrates her remarkable gift for classic soul-indebted melody through some stranger – and certainly more eclectic – sounds than she’s tried before.

Alicia is Keys' most moderate work, seemingly hedged with an objective to appeal to as many listeners as possible. There's at least no doubting the artist's intent to heal and uplift, and she puts it across with some of her most nuanced vocals.

Alicia is at once her most accessible and forward-minded album in years seems fitting for an artist who, until recently, has made a career out of playing things straight down the middle.

So, the message is clear and delivered. Half the work is done. However, if your goal is to advise and uplift, to guide and to reveal, and then to stick that message, the medium – the method of your delivery - needs to match, and this is where Alicia falters.

All told, it’s a fine album which balances hyper mainstream appeal with some very interesting diversions.

Alicia is not Keys’ finest work by any stretch of the imagination. Still, there are enough good tunes and her smooth vocals to recommend it. But likely downloading the released singles is sufficient for most fans of R&B.

An anthem of gratitude that has taken on a profound resonance in recent months, it offers the kind of hope you can hold on to, but that can also hold us together. Good job, indeed.
