The Detroit rapper’s debut album aims for a mix of transparency and commercial ambition, but he struggles to hold his own amid so much high-stakes production.

  • Exclaim!

He's been a robber on the run and an inmate, and now he's releasing an album with guest spots by Lil Yachty and Jeezy. So it's a dire disappointment to not hear Detroit's Tee Grizzley detail more of that compelling life experience on his debut studio album, Activated.

We’ll have to see, but I’m more excited for the future prospects rather than the product we were just given. Time will tell if he is able to capitalize on his full potential.

  • Rap & Hip-Hop Amino

Tee Grizzley comes back with his classic piano base in the background. Sort of reminding you of Meek Mill. He delivers an aggressive flow but it’s not really enough to stand out against counterparts that he’s compared to. Overall decent track, depends on taste.

While Activated is still full of bangers and hard-hitting rhymes, it at times feels like he trying to escape his image as a ‘street level’ rapper and tap into more commercial success – which is understandable, but it’s not when he’s at his best.

Activated is full of bangers that rival any handful of songs you might hear on Hot 97, and it’s a real fun record. If it does in fact help make him famous, though, I hope he can bring some more of the My Moment style to his next record.
