ABBA: The Album

ABBA: The Album is the fifth studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released in Scandinavia on 12 December 1977 through Polar Music, but due to the massive pre-orders the UK pressing plants were not able to press sufficient copies before Christmas 1977 and so it was not released in the UK until January 1978. The album was released in conjunction with ABBA: The Movie, with several of the songs featured in the film. -Wikipedia

The album remains obtensibly pop while delving into arty formulas the band hadn’t really tried. It’s perfectly catchy and beautifully written yet strange and off beat.

  • Albumism

Within the ABBA canon itself, ABBA: The Album was the transitional switch between the carefree airs of their earlier fare and their sophisticated second phase offerings.

ABBA's fifth album was a marked step forward for the group, having evolved out of Europop music into a world-class rock act over their previous two albums, they now proceeded to absorb and assimilate some of the influences around them, particularly the laid-back California sound of Fleetwood Mac (curiously, like ABBA, then a band with two couples at its center), as well as some of the attributes of progressive rock.

Well, it's not exactly up to Beatles standards, of course, but the title is very appropriate nevertheless - this is The Album indeed, and a truly great one.

My only knock on the release is that since it is spread onto two records, yet it only has nine songs. In turn, you have to get up to flip the album regularly when listening to ABBA - The Album. Unless you have a fancy record player. In that case, you are one of life's winners and should be listening to a lot of ABBA.

For ABBA: The Album, the group had only begun to venture out of disco to see what else was possible. Unfortunately, they didn’t build upon the album until the tail end of their career.

It's hardly worth denying that this is some unstoppable pop music. This is about as good as it gets -- the wonderful hits are still here, and now the filler material has been reduced to almost nothing. The result: This is one excellent album! How can it go wrong?

Well, so there you are. 'The Album', arguably one of the most consistent LP sets ABBA produced, yet a shade behind 'Arrival' in the entertainment stakes, certainly.

The record itself stands alone as an example of the extraordinary growth of one of the world’s most challenging and mature pop groups. By all means wallow in camp singalongs and Abba’s durability as West End showstoppers, but also doff your cap to their genius.

The result is easily digestible pop, without any profundity. This is not meant as a criticism, but as a statement. ABBA will probably not enrich someone’s life. But when you are feeling good, it’s alright to hum along to such a song.
