A Picture of Nectar manages to be extremely cohesive, firmly establishing Phish's unique brand to a much wider audience than they'd previously enjoyed. While they would continue to grow both on-stage and on record, this album captured a very vital period in their career and ranks as possibly the most essential studio album in their canon.

Phish incorporates many styles into this album, and their musical knowledge shines here. Its obvious they've been playing together for a while. Picture of Nectar is one of my favorite Phish albums, and shows Phish in some of their best years. Some of their most famous live songs are on this album, in shortened studio form, of course.

A Picture of Nectar is also the first time that the band’s playfulness was captured for the home listening audience, and it’s more successful for it. When the band has fun, we have fun, and A Picture of Nectar is absolutely a portrait of a band having fun.

A Picture of Nectar takes from great jam bands before them like The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band, but nothing by these artists has ever been done like this album.
