Dolly Parton's A Holly Dolly Christmas is a turkey, slathered in cheese... Christmas at Dolly's turns out to be all schmaltz and no personality.

At times the album can be fairly predictable, with the same acoustic country stylings showing up on every other song. Predictability isn’t usually a good thing, but a familiar voice of compassion and comfort is very much welcomed in a year of chaos, and Parton delivers just that.

This is mostly a fun - and sometimes funny - collection of joyous Christmas music. Parton gets seriously spiritual on "Circle of Love," a relatively stripped-down gospel song. It is a fine new Christmas song. We're not surprised, though, because Parton is just such a great songwriter. It makes this album a true gift, with "Circle of Love" its bow.

Stylistically, she revisits classic sounds while moving easily between contemporary country's pop and organic elements, all the while chatting and laughing with her duet partners and delivering to those who need it an undemanding and likeable Christmas album.
