Passion of the Weiss
A Gangsta’s Pain is a depreshtik album. Not depressing. But not hype-inducing either, in the way Time Served was. Despite his propensity for single-churning, Moneybagg Yo has a bleak sound. It can make you want to line up for the socially distanced club, or sit in your car with a blank notebook, or do and feel nothing at all.

Ratings Game Music
Moneybagg Yo is underrated. In my humbling opinion, he has dropped at least two projects that are fantastic. While I don’t quite love A Gangsta’s Pain, I do think that Moneybagg absolutely shines on the album.

Vinyl Chapters
Given that this release was supposed to launch Moneybagg Yo to worldwide stardom, it’s a shame that it falls so short. Perhaps I am the one who is wrong and it will be an international sensation, but for now, I’ll be holding off splurging on the merch and tour tickets.

All Music
When he's in trap mode or rapping over mournful piano loops on struggle tracks like "Free Promo" with Polo G and Lil Durk, Moneybagg Yo sounds at home and in complete control.

Ben's Beat
As we continue to wait for the crowd of superstars who have seemingly been holding onto their albums for far too long to perhaps finally start dropping some release dates and begin shifting the culture once more, middling, run-of-the-mill albums like A Gangsta’s Pain are what has mostly coloured the musical discussion in the early goings of 2021. Hopefully as the vaccine numbers go up, the quality of the music does as well.

Pitchfork
At his best, the stalwart Memphis rapper excels at heart-on-sleeve, bluesy songwriting, and his new album shows him deepening and opening up.

A Gangsta’s Pain is the Memphis native’s most diverse project to date thanks to a deeper and more concise dive into the personal side of his life as well as tapping into production his fans had yet to hear him with him, like The Neptunes for example.
