    Gore's lyrics sometimes veer on the facile, but David Gahan's singing comes more clearly to the fore throughout -- things aren't all there yet, but they were definitely starting to get close.

    The album is a mishmash of some new songs and songs Gore wrote as a teenager. What listeners ended up with was a strange bridge album between Depeche Mode’s pop past and their darker, more mature future.

    The Gore-helmed A Broken Frame was a patchy, tentative document but its singles signposted the way forward. See You and The Meaning Of Love were bright-as-a button pop baubles, but it was the brooding, elegiac Leave In Silence that hinted at the portentous Gothic electro-monsters that Depeche Mode were to become.
