It is probably fair to say that this isn’t the best from the Tony Martin era, but , it’s pretty good. And since Sabbath themselves haven’t cared to highlight this phase of their career, it’s definitely worth a pick. This is a great piece of history, if anything. And if there’s one thing admirable in the tradition of heavy metal, it’s the joy with which we’ll eagerly search the litters of history for unrepeatable relics. The Eternal Idol is itself a shining joy.

Flawed Sabbath is still better than most bands at their best, and that’s what makes their ’80s material, particularly Idol, so compelling. Beneath perpetual confusion, Sabbath made an album that at the very least is worth revisiting, or examining for the first time if you’re not up on the band’s ’80s output. It may not be entirely themselves, and yet it still feels like no one else could have made it but them.

The Eternal Idol is a near flawless album, with its major issue being it had to be compared to several other genre defining classics in the Sabbath library. There’s a massive chance you’ve never heard this album, or ever even bothered to listen to it based and what you’ve heard about Martin and his mediocrity. I ensure you will be satisfied by what you hear on The Eternal Idol.

The Eternal Idol contains a bona fide heavy metal classic for the ages in its monumental opener, "The Shining," which Iommi had been kicking around in demo form since 1984, and which, in its final glorious form, is rightfully considered one of Black Sabbath's greatest songs bar none, regardless of singer, era, or album sales.

‘The Eternal Idol’ reinstated Black Sabbath as a pure heavy metal band. It didn't hurt that Tony Iommi penned worthy songs like ‘Ancient Warrior,' ‘Glory Ride’ and ‘The Shining,’ which arguably is the best-ever Sabbath song not sung by "the big two" -- Ozzy Osbourne or Ronnie James Dio.

The Eternal Idol is not for those fans who just like Ozzy, or just like Dio. Eternal Idol is for the metal maven who wants to know every chapter in the band’s history.

There is not a bad song on the album. Bringing in a completely unknown vocalist in Tony Martin was quite a risk but he makes up for that risk with an amazing performance throughout the album. I have heard people say that this is the best album that Sabbath ever released, but that is defiantly not the case. But none the less it is a very solid release.
