Rolling Stone
October 14, 1982. There is a cost to Carlos Santana’s eclecticism, however, and it is evident on Shangó. Precisely because he has chosen no distinct stylistic route for his band, the music often lacks distinction altogether.

AllMusic
. . . although the band once again slipped below the Top Ten and gold-selling status, with the album peaking at only Number 22, and even this was the highest Santana would get until Supernatural in 1999.

Unheralded Rock Gems
August 16, 2011. One can return to this album and enjoy it time and again. The sound remains fresh and sparkling heightening ones sense to the same level at each visit. A must have in all rock collections.

Ultimate Santana
Named after one of the dominant religions in Latin America and the Caribbean, Shango was certainly relevant for the time, but is not one of the strongest albums in Santana's history. It did, however, produce a couple of hits -- thanks to the vocal prowess of lead singer Alex Ligertwood.

The Great Albums
Say what you will about Santana’s move into adult-contemporary pop, but one thing that did not escape him in that transition was his ear for a good tune, and the band shows some remarkably great taste in outside material on this disc, . . . .

Wilson & Alroy's Record Reviews
Basically, you'll only believe you're listening to a Santana record when Carlos beams in for a brief, frequently exciting solo - otherwise, it's unadulterated MOR sludge. (DBW) They did have another major hit here with "Hold On," but then dropped off the charts again. (JA)
