SPACE ODDITY

David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity (the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart). Space Oddity was the name used for releases of the album in 1984, 1990, and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues. - WIKIPEDIA

2009 - It 's hardly the most flattering portrait of a man who would go on to sell the world, but still a quaint keepsake from a time when he was just trying to blag his way through mainland Europe.

Davey Jones applying for a Tolkien-addled hippie; a 'space oddity' indeed. But parts of it are real enjoyable.

'Space Oddity' becomes a very charming and listenable album. It's no classic, it is very much of its time, yet it has a sense of being youthful and somewhat lovely in places.

Space Oddity is a decent enough effort, but it's pretty clear that Bowie was going to have to head in yet another different direction if he wanted sustained success.

This is certainly a strange little album, and it sounds nothing like anything else Bowie would ever again produce.

The guy has hereby left childlike folk mostly behind and is trying to replace it with slightly more "real" adult music with snatches of psychedelia, blues and pop rock.

2007 - ...this kaleidoscopic album is an amalgamation of Dave’s obsessions...

2017 - If you listened to this directly after David Bowie's debut album, you probably wouldn't even believe the same artist made both records.

Space Oddity is the record that really set the course for his career. His sophomore record's psychedelic and cinematic soundscapes escaped his debut's avant-garde tones and launched him in a folk odyssey.

2009 - Apart from its title track, Space Oddity owes far more to the artists who were Bowie's contemporaries and influences at the time than any sort of celestial inspiration.

2009 - Unsurprisingly the album proved to be an utter failure to launch, and didn’t even chart until its post-Ziggy rerelease and repackage in 1972.
