Reveal..
| R.E.M.Reveal..
Reveal is the 12th studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., released in 2001 on Warner Bros. After having adjusted to former drummer Bill Berry's departure and releasing Up to mixed response in 1998, R.E.M. released the more upbeat Reveal, co-produced with long-time collaborator Patrick McCarthy. The album received generally positive reviews from music critics. -Wikipedia
Critic Reviews
Show All-
Pitchfork
On the scale of human accomplishments, turning out a classic album ought to rank up there with climbing Mount Everest
-
Rolling Stone
Reveal doesn’t rock out much, which was never R.E.M.’s department anyway.
-
NME
Another accomplishment by massively accomplished band.
-
Sputnik Music
Good.
-
BBC
Reveal has a warmth that comes from finally being able to use all the shiny happy toys.
-
Slant Magazine
Despite electronic elements, more vintage than anything else.
-
Pop Matters
Reveal beautifully pushes the group along in this next phase of their career; it showcases their newfound musical confidence and openness while containing the same artful tunefulness and lyrical impact that made the best of their early works so memorable and lasting.
-
All Music
Reveal winds up sharing the same strangely distant feel of Up, even if it's a tighter, better record.
-
The Guardian
It looks like we'll never get another Finest Worksong or Orange Crush, but there are compensations.
-
The Music Box
Reveal is chock-full of ideas that remain incomplete, and the result is largely unsatisfying.
-
Vulture
Reveal, touted as the “happy” record upon its release, is full of aimless and muted anger, but in that Brian Wilson way of feeling helpless and bitter on a beautiful day.
-
Head Heritage
Check this album out - it is a classic.
-
Under the Radar Mag
An up-tempo, political rocker.
-
Adrian's Album Reviews
We do get a healthy dose of fine songs here, and it's a good record. That really should be all that matters.
-
Diffuser
Their glory days were over, and they knew it. ‘Reveal’ at least tries to hold on to some of the memories.
-
Independent
Reveal, an album whose depth, variety and subtlety recalls the album many regard as their greatest, Automatic for the People.
-
RTE
'Reveal' is a fine album that will do nothing to dispel the notion that REM are still a force to be reckoned with.
-
Music OMH
So, the “greatest thing since bread came sliced”? Well it’s certainly the best R.E.M. record in nearly a decade.
-
Mark's Record Reviews
Again, they did a fantastic job with the production but, especially compared to all pre-Monster REM, it just doesn't seem to have a whole lot of memorable songs on it.
-
uDiscover Music
An album of woozily sun-struck ballads.
-
Summer Turns
Revered.
-
The Clarkson Integrator
The album is a good over all but not one of REM’s more memorable ones and it shows a different direction from their earlier music, one that is a subtler form of alternative rock.
-
Slate
Well-wrought, melodic gems.
-
Inlander
Represents what I always thought was the worst of R.E.M. -- the "necessary" pop songs.
-
John McFerrin Music Reviews
Crimminy, did anybody do generic better than these guys?
-
Don Ignacio's Music Reviews
This marks an improvement over Up, but not much.
-
CLUAS
On first listen Reveal glistens - standing out as an album of immense quality. And each listen from that point on just gets better. Behold the fruits of a truly international project.
-
Exclaim!
Anyone who thought things were looking Up was sadly mistaken.
-
The Solute
Reveal is the uplifting album that has grasped the new instrumentation and pushed it further into their traditional sound.
-

REM has been going strong for twenty years now.
-

One of the best 50 albums of 2001.
