Reveal..

Reveal is the 12th studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., released in 2001 on Warner Bros. After having adjusted to former drummer Bill Berry's departure and releasing Up to mixed response in 1998, R.E.M. released the more upbeat Reveal, co-produced with long-time collaborator Patrick McCarthy. The album received generally positive reviews from music critics. -Wikipedia

Reveal beautifully pushes the group along in this next phase of their career; it showcases their newfound musical confidence and openness while containing the same artful tunefulness and lyrical impact that made the best of their early works so memorable and lasting.

Reveal winds up sharing the same strangely distant feel of Up, even if it's a tighter, better record.

Reveal, touted as the “happy” record upon its release, is full of aimless and muted anger, but in that Brian Wilson way of feeling helpless and bitter on a beautiful day.

We do get a healthy dose of fine songs here, and it's a good record. That really should be all that matters.

Their glory days were over, and they knew it. ‘Reveal’ at least tries to hold on to some of the memories.

Reveal, an album whose depth, variety and subtlety recalls the album many regard as their greatest, Automatic for the People.

'Reveal' is a fine album that will do nothing to dispel the notion that REM are still a force to be reckoned with.

So, the “greatest thing since bread came sliced”? Well it’s certainly the best R.E.M. record in nearly a decade.

Again, they did a fantastic job with the production but, especially compared to all pre-Monster REM, it just doesn't seem to have a whole lot of memorable songs on it.

The album is a good over all but not one of REM’s more memorable ones and it shows a different direction from their earlier music, one that is a subtler form of alternative rock.
