Make Believe

Make Believe is the fifth studio album by American rock band Weezer, released on May 10, 2005 by Geffen Records. The album was considered to be a return to some of the emotionally vulnerable lyrics of Weezer's previous releases, and due to the strength of the hit single "Beverly Hills", the album was a commercial success. In addition, "Beverly Hills" also gained Weezer's first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. Despite this, Make Believe received mixed reviews from critics and fans, although it has remained a consistent seller. The recording process of Make Believebegan prior to the release of their previous album, Maladroit; however, it was prolonged compared to the recording of most of Weezer's previous albums, and lasted for almost three years. Rivers Cuomo's songwriting on Make Believe was described as "return to musical, emotional bloodletting", although the lyrics were noticeably more simplified than before. - Wikipedia

  • Pitchfork

After a couple of free passes, the third album from the 21st century incarnation of Weezer uses up the band's last shred of nostalgia-driven goodwill.

Weezer lives or dies on Cuomo's ability to turn his particular hang-ups, neuroses, and obsessions into catchy, fast-paced, emotionally intense songs that everyone with problems can turn into their personal soundtrack for a few minutes.

Make Believe is not Pinkerton. Weezer has problems, and it's reflected in both their strained relationships and, ultimately, their music.

The truth is that any Weezer copycat band could have made this record.

If they're not immediately taken with Make Believe, give it time. After all, Pinkerton didn't win fans immediately.

If Make Believe teaches us anything, it’s that sometimes applying yourself won’t necessarily get you anywhere.

With the band knowing that they could, in all honesty, do whatever they want and would still have fans stand by them, they began work on what was to become Make Believe.

If you have some antidepressants (or a very optimistic nature), then it's safe to listen to this album in moderation.

You can’t just play two chords and yell words and call that a hook.

Good but not great, it’s not quite the disaster it could so easily have been.

There were at least 4 or 5 songs on here that I thought were pretty good - at least on a par with anything they've put out since the days of Pinkerton.
