The production walks the thin line between "harsh enough" and "too light". Whenever the quintet pulls out all the stops, the album glitters with a profound heaviness, but the rather emotional parts often fail to generate an appropriate pressure. Of course, all instruments are well-balanced, while the voice stands in the spot light.

These songs ranged from widescreen, malevolent doom anthems like the title track, "Kill in the Spirit World" and the positively awesome "When Death Calls" (featuring a guitar solo by Queen’s Brian May), to comparatively streamlined modern metal juggernauts like "Devil & Daughter," "Call of the Wild" and "Black Moon" -- all of which benefited from excellent keyboard shadings courtesy of longtime Sabbath sideman Geoff Nicholls and inventive bass lines from jazz-trained session ace Laurence Cottle

Headless Cross is an amazing work of art that got greatly overlooked. Naturally, it would gain a cult following over the years and eventually be something that younger generations would dig up, causing a slight resurgence. In my eyes, it’s essential listening and tops even some of the Ozzy records. If you haven’t given this a listen yet, I highly recommend sending it to the top of your priorities.

If Headless Cross were remixed today, to just tone down the keyboards a tad, I think it would help a lot. But I do like this album. Sabbath had written some great songs (all songs are credited to the band), and Tony Martin was at the absolute peak of his voice.

Headless Cross really is one of Sabbath's best albums. Tony Martin really takes the cake here because he outdoes everyone and proves he is just as good as Dio and Ozzy. Every moment on this album is amazing, from the spooky intro of "The Gates Of Hell," to the fading seconds of the mighty "Nightwing," Black Sabbath dishes out a masterpiece.

If you like good old-fashioned heavy metal with no gimmick except for killer songs, then you will like this album no matter what name is on it.
