  • Slant

Breakout ends with a few by-the-numbers adult contemporary ballads, including the minimalist “Bottom of the Ocean” and the country-pop “These Four Walls,” which highlight the often unpleasant nasal quality of Miley’s voice.

Breakout isn’t fun enough or accomplished enough to really excite any segment of her fan base; rather, it’s just enjoyable enough and shows just enough flashes of maturation and skill to halt doubts regarding Cyrus’s future in the entertainment industry.

Breakout" is unlikely fodder for the razzle-dazzle road shows and 3-D concert films to come. As a portrait of the artist as a young malcontent, though, it's rarely less than fascinating.

It comes down to fewer pink tops and more gray thoughts. On “Breakout,” her first stand-alone album under her real name, she eases up on songs with total-affirmation chants about being the captain of her ship.

With "Breakout," Cyrus has clearly made a choice to break from the shiny, happy "Hannah Montana" character, but she hasn't scuffed her sound up so much that her fans won't recognize that she's just being Miley.

Breakout hits all the marks that a 2008 pop album should, right down to a dance remix and a song about saving the environment; cunningly, "Wake Up America" is one of the album's catchiest moments.

Much has been made of the fact that Cyrus co-wrote nearly all the songs on the record, so it’s hard to take a swipe at the lyrics once you realize they were written by a teenage girl barely into high school.

Breakout's mix of rock, pop, techno-pop, and a little bit country will easily please Miley fans, and shows she can stand on her own without the blond wig.

The important thing to remember, though, is the market that Miley Cyrus is aiming for; teen girls who have grown up with the singer and are willing to subscribe to her accounts of heartbreak and 'stupid boys'.

You'd be wrong to underestimate Breakout the album does have some brilliant pop moments, their just not strong enough to define Miley as a serious pop act, so to speak she doesn't have her ("Baby One More Time") or ("Genie In A Bottle") but "7 Things" comes close.
