304
| Jewel304
0304 is the fourth studio album by American singer Jewel. It was released on June 3, 2003 by Atlantic Records. Inspired by the sudden success of scoring a number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart with "Serve the Ego" the final single from her previous album, This Way in early November 2002, Jewel decided to make a radical departure from her previous folk-oriented musical efforts and recorded a dance album. - WIKIPEDIA

SLANT
The album presents one of the most startling—yet oddly fitting—transformations in pop history.

Jewel tries to stand for lyrical integrity, despite fears that she’s giving in to commercialism.

Nevertheless, it's a situation that she might have to put up with for some time to come. Whether Britain will take to 0304 remains to be seen, but the US seems to have fallen for it in a big way: over there, it has already sold over 350,000 copies. Sometimes, it seems, the cheapest tricks prove surprisingly effective.

Here, even if it's under the veneer of commercial pop, she puts herself out on the line more than she ever has, and she's come up with her best record, with her best set of songs and best music yet. As she notes in her message to fans, "It's the first record I enjoy listening to. It's fun!" She's completely right on that note -- against all, it's the first album of hers that's a sheer pleasure to hear.

0304 is an enjoyable 54 minutes of pop, full of catchy, chirpy songs, proving Jewel’s ear candy as well as eye candy credentials. The album could be the soundtrack of a summer’s day at the beach, or for getting ready for a girly night out.

Yes, 0304 is a huge departure for Jewel. And, yes, it is a bit of a sell-out. But it is Jewel's right to change her musical style if she sees fit. More importantly, it works for her.

0304 is a very good album from a talent that is capable of much quality. This time, her quality is in her highly listenable new album where it should be. Where she goes from here is anybody's guess but you can bet one thing, there'll be more people to greet her when she gets there.
