12 Play is the debut studio album by American R&B and soul musician R. Kelly; it was released on November 9, 1993, by Jive Records. The album follows his tenure with R&B group Public Announcement, with whom he released one album, Born into the 90's (1992). Although dubious of lyric, 12 Play still sounds contemporary and frequently surprising.

All Music
What's most wonderful about 12 Play isn't Kelly's mostly dreamy, occasionally dirty, always enrapturing rhetoric, nor his likewise arousing mood music; rather, it's his precise ability to tie them together so perfectly.
-
The Early Registration
Ultimately, it ends up being in Kelly’s straightforwardness and simplicity that he succeeds, rather than abstractness.

Consequence of Sound
The answer is easy – nobody cares.

Soul Bounce
So while 12 Play is admittedly packed with certifiable hits and undeniable slow jams and it does have some distinct memories for me, it's no longer an album that I can revisit without questioning if the effort was truly intended for the grown as well as the sexy.
