1000 Forms of Fear is an experiment in how to make a solid, cohesive pop album without actually being a pop star.

What's distinctive here, though, is the marshalling of a huge arsenal of chart-pop dynamism behind the distinctly grown-up songs of a woman who doesn't want to be famous.

When you listen to 1000 Forms of Fear and hear the real pain in her beautiful, guttural vocal hiccups, it doesn’t feel like a voyeuristic experience but, rather, like an old friend’s new hurting or your own past mistakes.

Pop songwriting powerhouse Sia keeps her darker and more complex songs for herself but retains the endorphin-releasing electropop climaxes.

Her knack for heart-swelling choruses shines through on a set of tracks you might play while winning a marathon: There’s triumph in her tiniest tics, like the echoing woo-ooh on the outro to “Big Girls Cry” or the sweetened trap toms of “Elastic Heart.”

Listening to 1000 Forms Of Fear, you can hear how strong Furler’s influence is on the pop stars with whom she works.

  • Slant

Surpassing her earlier albums in its consistency and balls-to-the-wall gusto, 1000 Forms of Fear should be the vessel that rockets the singer out of relative obscurity and into the stratosphere populated by those more recognizable stars who’ve come to dominate the pop-music universe thanks, in part, to her songwriting skills.

1000 Forms Of Fear certainly has the songs and contemporary sheen to make Sia a star in her own right, but it’s at the expense of both her emotional intimacy and her offbeat personality.

These aren’t drastic alterations to the standard Sia formula, but what you do get is an album with a very specific identity. Furler hasn't ‘done a Grimes’ and released her version of a song that was rejected by someone else.

Sia’s done it again. This time for herself.
